I have used an older version of Renamer4Mac since 2006, and this new version changed the interface, not for the better, and it does not remember the last way I was using it when I reopen it. So I am not at all preferring it over the older version. The older version was free, and if I could guess this change was partly a justification to charge money.
I would say that if the other needed to charge money then he should have just said so, which I would support, because it was such a great program. If this current version had the option to use the old layout, I would use that all the time. No, it does not. MacOS renaming feature is nice, but it doesn't come even close to the flexibility of Renamer.
Although through Automator you can still create some cool renaming workflows yourself, it's inconvenient and you have to bake in the logic for each action. Renamer comes with renamelets, which are very easy to use, customizable and reusable. Additionally, Renamer allows much more powerful schemes that are simply not achievable using macOS interface. You may not need that kind of power, but you can't say 'oh ya, macOS does it for free'. Hi there! Thanks for your feedback. Glad to hear you like the app!The reason we can only support OS X 10.7.3 Lion and newer is because Apple's Sandbox file authentication for Mac App Store apps requires said version. In order to keep both our direct and the Mac App Store versions as consistent as possible, we had to disable support for Snow Leopard. You can, however, copy your preferences (com.creativebe.Renamer.plist) file between machines for older versions of Renamer and with it your presets.
You can find this file in the following path:/Library/Preferences/com.creativebe.Renamer.plistHope this clears things up! The best interface (not perfect, see below) and, for some reason, the icon is really well designed.By the way, I always thought Renamer was not that powerful but it supports Regular Expressions and once you play with them you will probably get the result you want. The site mention Regular Expression but this feature is not that obvious. It’s hidden in the Find & Replace. In addition, and here the interface could be better, the Find text box field is too short for some Regular Expressions you need. I wish there was a way to resize the right panel too. I really like this renaming app.Version 4.0 is the first version of this app I've ever used, so whatever interface changes were made from previous versions didn't bother me.
In fact I quite like the clean interface. It took me a few minutes to figure out how presets are made and used, but once I understood that I had absolutely no problems.I've got several different renaming utilities to chose from but Renamer is the one I keep using. I agree that $29.00 is pretty steep for a renaming utility, nevertheless, it's the one I like. I don't get this allergic reaction some people have to the terminal.
If you want a bit more finder integration then useput you in a terminal in the current directory in finder and the rest is a sed one liner. I agree there's a lot of potential for user error, but you can get sed to echo what it'll do before wrecking up the place.I guess my point is that nice GUIs go a long way, but at the end of the day there will always be those tasks that are better suited to the terminal. It's a shame I know. I'd rather have a nice graphical doodad to do this in a clever way using finder but nothing I've seen (forgetting cost for a moment) comes even close to the capabilities of sed. I'm not a computer scientist you know, and even my modest mind can cope with a bit of command line.
This does exactly what I needed and was instantly obvious what did what. However, just a few things need better explaining. Like regular expressions.

For example, I want to remove checksums from names in the format of 'A875BD6F' but don't want to impinge on anything outside of the brackets. I might be thinking of something too complicated for this, which might be a good excuse to make a GREP? System and a minor shareware fee for it.

(I'll probably have to research this on-line, but was kind of hoping it was in the help menu). Also, if recursive means working on folders within folders of files, a checkbox needs to be added to allow this for folders dragged in with files. I could only get the 'recursive' to show up when only dragging a single folder in, but needed to have it work on only the files and full folders I dragged over, not a single full folder.A checkbox for working on files only might be useful, as typically I never need to alter the names of folders. This little app has saved me over 20 hours of work, in just 5 minutes.
